It's that time of year! Though most toys provide a degree of constructive play, some are better than others when it comes to improving specific skills such as Sensory Processing, Fine Motor, Social, and Motor Planning skills. The following toys are a fan favorite for many of my clients. These are highly requested during sessions, and the kids play with them time and time again!
Any of the following products do not sponsor Wekiva Kids Therapy. Please read the item's entire description before purchasing it to ensure it is safe for your child. For any toy with small things, please provide constant adult supervision. This list was intended for children three years or older.
Sensory
Sensory Processing is how the brain interprets stimuli such as touch, smell, and sounds. We use sensory processing daily to help us learn new skills and protect ourselves from danger. However, for some children, limited sensory processing skills may make it challenging to participate in academic or self-care activities such as circle time, painting, trying new foods, haircuts, etc. These toys are recommended to help with tactile defensiveness that may affect a child's ability to participate in everyday activities.
The following are great stocking stuffers! Though sensory toys can be messy, they can be fun for the kids.
Fine Motor
Fine Motor skills are necessary for a child to engage in self-care tasks such as manipulating buttons, opening toothpaste, putting on socks, and so much more. These activities require the use of small movements from the hands, good eye contact, and overall postural control to complete the task without assistance successfully.
Play-Doh Kit
Games
Board Games are a great way to simulate structured social interactions between peers. These games work on following multi-step directions, reducing emotional turbulence, attending to tasks, and interacting appropriately with peers.
The holidays can be a magical time for children to learn and play with their families. Hopefully, this list can provide helpful insights into fun games and toys children can enjoy for the new year!
